Winter is a time to enjoy winter sports, snow days, and cozy times indoors. However, winter can also be a real hassle when you have to move homes because of the snow and cold temperatures. Whether you are moving across town or across the country, winter moving poses challenges that are unique to this time of year.
Turn on Utilities at the New House in Advance
This tip applies to moving at any time of year, but it is more important in the winter. Letting the utilities lapse will cause your new home to be cold and dark when you arrive. Lack of indoor heat could even cause the plumbing pipes to freeze, stopping the flow of water and possibly causing damage. Whether your heating system runs on electricity or gas, make sure all the utilities will be on by the morning of your moving day.
Check the Weather Forecast for Winter Moving
Be aware of what type of weather to expect along your moving route, no matter how far your move is. It’s important to be aware of any severe snowstorms in the forecast, as they could impede your ability to move safely. Talk with your movers about rescheduling the move if the weather is unsafe.
Keep Essentials Within Easy Reach
Certain items will make your winter move easier and more comfortable. Layer your clothing and have a spare change of clothes in case you get wet. Have plenty of coats, hats, gloves, and scarfs available for the whole family. Keep snacks readily available and even pack a coffee maker and crockpot so that you can make coffee and heat up some soup when you arrive at the new house.
Cover Floors
Melted snow, ice melt, salt, and chunks of ice can damage the floors of your new home, especially if they are wood. Protect the floors during your winter move with tarps or painter’s drapes. Just be careful when walking over them, because the material may be slippery when wet.
Clear Pathways to Prepare for Winter Moving
Clear the driveway, sidewalks, and the path leading up to the door to increase safety for everyone involved in moving. Sprinkle ice melt on pathways in advance if you are able. If the snow is deep, shovel a path up the driveway and through the yard.
